Learning History with American Girl Dolls
Encouraged by a love for American girl dolls, students will learn American history, geography, and culture. They will do fun activities, games, crafts, and even some cooking all coordinated with their learning about lives and times of the American Girl dolls. Families are encouraged to read along the American Girl books at home (not provided.) We will learn about the lives and historical context of the American Girl dolls. Dolls (any type) are welcome to join us in class.
Lego Challenge Builds and Robotics
Brick lovers will use Legos, Lego Software, and Lego Movie Maker to design and build their own creations and make them come life with sound and motion. Some of the robotic projects include a remote-controlled rover, a helicopter, dump truck, and a forklift. Students will be challenged to build catapults that shoot marshmallows, ziplines for their minifigures, marble mazes, bridges, towers, and a lot more!
Mixed Media Art
Students will create their own masterpieces while experimenting with art principles and elements. Various mediums will be used to create works of art such as, but not limited to, clay, paint, plaster, stencils, papier-mâché, watercolors, and oil pastels. Older students will learn some art history and culture as they work on their creations.
There is a part or position for every child that would like one as they sing, dance, and learn about backstage production while preparing for a holiday production in December (will include Christian content) and a spring show too! (Students who prefer not to perform may help with theater production.) Exact show dates and program details to be decided based on enrollment numbers each semester. Mrs. Ann Burgess is a highly skilled, classically trained theater teacher. We are so thrilled to have her experience and expertise leading our rising talents.
Project Based Learning
Students will learn new skills as they engage in active exploration, critical thinking, collaboration, communication, research, and problem solving while completing real world tasks such as designing board games, creating brochures and posters, producing videos or plays, planning a small business, or conducting interviews. Topics will be determined by the interest of the students.
Students will learn new skills and principles while engaging in age appropriate, hands-on activities to implement Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematic fundamentals. While having fun, students will be enhancing their creative thinking, problem solving, and team building skills. Some examples of activities are learning about buoyancy by building boats, constructing simple machines such as ramps and pulleys to complete jobs, and creating solar ovens to learn about alternative forms of energy. Older students will have a great time experimenting with coding and robotics, too.
Middle school students in grades 6th-8thmay choose to be a teacher’s helper for a class period or two. They will gain experience and skills as they assist others and enjoying being of service. This is a great way to gain experience that teens can add to a future job application.
Writing for Fun and Real Life, too!
Whether it is writing a short story, resume, poem, or documenting your future goals…good writing skill are so important and need to be practiced and honed. We will have fun doing just that! All skill levels will enjoy this class and improve their writing too.
